Maybe you can try using the iXML library directly, its quite well docmented: iXML ABAP Objects Jumpstart - XML- Library - SAP Library

As far as I can see the function module you mentioned also uses it, but since it is an unreleased FM, the direct usage of the library seems to be more reliable.
