It depends upon the IDOC type which you are using. Does the field which you intend to update is custom one or standard?

'/' denotes there is no change to that field and SAP doesn't update that.

Debug the inbound processing function module and check in the routine which moves the IDOC data to structure to be updated. Check if the blank value is getting passed.

If not, ask the sender to send a arbitrary value say "999" and check if the field contains this value in the IDOC user exit, then clear the field (say vbak-zfield)
