Firstly let me say many thanks for taking an interest in my problem. It is a bit of a head scratcher alright so I welcome your input!!
We only use IE11 here but I have one of my guys testing in chrome this morning so will report back his findings when I get them.
I have not attempted to clear the cache but I will.

I checked out your blog on work protect mode however the path that you have indicated is not present on our system:
I have looked at these menu options but cannot see anything regarding applications or services.
